Earth | the bohemian, organic style root: GUIDE

The Earth Style Root is the rugged, outdoorsy source of inspiration in your style. Earth is a little messy and it roots all things natural. This is my guide for if you might be an earth and how to dress for your new style root

Personality

Although style roots are primarily aesthetic, and it is okay to simply be drawn visually to one of the style roots, usually the style roots will correspond with personality. The Earth is likely to have some of the following characteristics:

  • grounded

  • empathetic

  • free spirit

  • caring

  • scattered

  • nature-loving

  • spiritual

  • relaxed

Lifestyle

What you like in clothing will often correlate with what you like in other spheres of life, whether it be interior design or simply the activities you do.

Those with the Earth style root might enjoy the following activities:

  • foraging

  • wild swimming

  • hiking

  • travelling

  • horse riding

  • listening to music from another era

  • shopping for antique or vintage items

  • bird-watching

  • baking with raw ingredients

How to Style

The earth style root can be described as…

  • bohemian

  • rugged

  • outdoorsy

  • natural

  • eclectic

  • rural

  • retro

  • academic

  • mystical

  • rustic

You don’t have to include ALL of the following elements in an outfit to create the Earth effect, but one to three details will help to create this impression. There are also lots of other elements I could include, but I think this is a good starting point!

Natural textures

If it looks like it could have come from nature, the fabric plays an important role in creating an earth effect. Look for fabrics which are rough or rugged, such as denim, leather or linen

Earthy colours

Colours which you would find in the outdoors, or could be created in a natural way are perfect for adding an earthy look. Shades such as olive green, rust red or various types of brown are very effective.

Loose, flowing silhouettes

Flowing, relaxed silhouettes create an easy, natural silhouette which looks handmade. Silhouettes like flared legs, off-shoulder necklines or baggy shapes all work well.

Practical, outdoorsy pieces

Any item that you would authentically wear outdoors to combat the weather or terrain are perfect for adding a rugged feel, such as cowboy boots, a fleece, hiking shoes or a wool sweater.

Eclectic patterns

Muddy, natural-looking patterns which reflect the natural terrain and landscape are very important for creating an earth outfit. Small florals or tribal patterns, for instance, are good examples.

The stone style root adds sportiness, practicality and a relaxed feel to any outfit. Do you think you are Earth? Leave me a comment below!

Across the Seasons

It is quite easy to picture what stone might look like in autumn and summer, but what about in the other months? Your style root should stay with you across all four seasons, but it can be tempting to lean on a different root when you can’t visualise how your REAL style root might look.
