Moon | the dark, mysterious style root: GUIDE

The Moon Style Root is the rebellious source of inspiration in your style. The Moon and the night it represents is gloomy, deep and celestial. This is my guide for if you might be a moon and how to dress for your new style root

Personality

Although style roots are primarily aesthetic, and it is okay to simply be drawn visually to one of the style roots, usually the style roots will correspond with personality. The Moon is likely to have some of the following characteristics:

  • emotional

  • rebellious

  • moody

  • deep

  • gloomy

  • intense

  • daring

  • thoughtful

  • introspective

  • unreserved

  • impulsive

Lifestyle

What you like in clothing will often correlate with what you like in other spheres of life, whether it be interior design or simply the activities you do.

Those with the Moon style root might enjoy the following activities:

  • listening to music alone

  • going for a walk on a cloudy day

  • going to gigs of their favourite bands or artists

  • going on a historical tour

  • visiting museums

  • reading names in graveyards

  • painting

  • watching cult movies

  • dancing in the moonlight

How to Style

The moon style root can be described as…

  • mysterious

  • edgy

  • ethereal

  • gothic

  • rebellious

  • haunting

  • mystical

  • dark

  • vampiric

I often think of the moon style root as putting the other style roots into the minor key!

You don’t have to include ALL of the following elements in an outfit to create the Moon effect, but one to three details will help to create this impression. There are also lots of other elements I could include, but I think this is a good starting point!

Dark Colours

A deep and dark colour palette conveys a sense of moodiness and is a direct translation of the night. Black is most typically associated with moon, but deep reds, purples, greens and blues also have a strong moon feel.

Leather

Leather is associated with protection; practical use of leather includes motorbiking, aviator jackets and to shield your feet in dangerous work situations - leather is therefore associated with adventure. Leather therefore can convey a rebellious attitude.

Studs

Studs are sharp, can cause pain and generally convey a sense of β€œstay away”. They are associated with danger, but also introversion and sense of protection.

Metallic

Metal is strong, powerful and sharp. It has a deadliness to it; it’s a key material in knives and swords. Metallic fabrics can create a rock n roll feel.

Plaid

Vivienne Westwood knew the power of plaid back in the 1980s. It is a strong, geometric fabric associated with battle and blood.

The moon style root adds edginess, depth and a darkness to any outfit. Do you think you are a Moon? Leave me a comment below!

Across the Seasons

It is quite easy to picture what moon might look like in autumn and winter, but what about in the other months? Your style root should stay with you across all four seasons, but it can be tempting to lean on a different root when you can’t visualise how your REAL style root might look.
