Flower | the delicate, intricate style root: GUIDE

The Flower Style Root is the delicate source of inspiration in your style. Flowers are often sweet, gentle and soft. This is my guide for if you might be a flower and how to dress for your new style root

Personality

Although style roots are primarily aesthetic, and it is okay to simply be drawn visually to one of the style roots, usually the style roots will correspond with personality. The Flower is likely to have some of the following characteristics:

  • sweet

  • innocent

  • gentle

  • charming

  • elegant

  • modest

  • graceful

Lifestyle

What you like in clothing will often correlate with what you like in other spheres of life, whether it be interior design or simply the activities you do.

Those with the Flower style root might enjoy the following activities:

  • afternoon tea

  • picking daisies in a meadow

  • painting a watercolour

  • reading an old poetry book

  • wandering around a vintage store

  • ballet

  • watching a classical concert

  • picnic by the Eiffel Tower

How to Style

The flower style root can be described as…

  • delicate

  • intricate

  • feminine

  • dainty

  • pastel

  • elegant

  • girly

  • whimsical

You don’t have to include ALL of the following elements in an outfit to create the Flower effect, but one to three details will help to create this impression. There are also lots of other elements I could include, but I think this is a good starting point!

Bows and Ribbons

Bows are traditionally associated with childhood - of having a ribbon to tie your pigtails - and so they create a very β€˜floral’, femininity.

Ruffles

Ruffles are a great way to add a β€˜floral’ detail to an outfit, as it adds a 3D component which is small, delicate and intricate.

Lace and Broderie

As well as historically being associated with femininity and girlhood, lace and broderie are small and delicate so have an inherently β€˜flower’-like feel.

Pastel and Light Tones

Colours are the first thing we see when we look at an outfit so they make the most significant impact. Delicate colours make an instant β€˜floral’ impression as they create this gentle feel.

Small delicate patterns

Patterns such as gingham or florals are a very easy way to add a delicate feel to an outfit, especially when those patterns are reminiscent of childhood.

The flower style root adds innocence, intricacy and a frothy feel to any outfit. Do you think you are a Flower? Leave me a comment below!

Across the Seasons

It is quite easy to picture what flower might look like in summer and spring, but what about in the cooler months? Your style root should stay with you across all four seasons, but it can be tempting to lean on a different root when you can’t visualise how your REAL style root might look.

Flower in Men’s Fashion

Although flower can be perceived as a feminine-inspired Style Root, each of the style roots also plays a role in a more masculine expression of personal style. When I think about flower in men’s fashion, I am reminded of my own Grandad, who was a gentle-soul in some ways and expressed this through smart floral shirts. Here are some ways flower might express itself:
