You are organising your wardrobe wrong: 9 Steps.

My wardrobe was becoming unmanageable. Every day I found myself throwing my clothes all over my bed until my room became a miniature apocalypse scene. This is because I have not been implementing my simple structure for organising your wardrobe which I am going to break down in this post for you.

No.1 Blank Slate

Always start with a blank slate. It can be tempting when you have a messy room to just try and organise through the mess. Have a good tidy and clean up so you can start fresh.

No.2 Have a space to display your favourite items.

Your favourite items are the pieces which combine all 3 of your style roots. Ask yourself questions of these pieces:

Does this item represent the version of myself?

Does this item work for my body type?

Does this item work for my colour season?

No.3 store your out-of-season wardrobe

Organise your wardrobe by seasons and store away any items that won’t be worn during the current season. I.e it is currently Autumn, so let’s store away all our Summer items. Putting away the wardrobe that you’re not currently using is great because it is really exciting when you get that wardrobe back out the next time you need it and it can feel like shopping your own wardrobe!

No.4 Store any items which don’t fit you anymore.

A lot of people may often encourage you just to get rid of the clothes that don’t fit you but we all fluctuate with our weight. If some clothes are currently a size too big for you, they may fit you again some day. For example, last year I was a size above what I am now and a lot of the clothes are too big for me, but I know that I will probably be that size again so what is the point in getting rid of these clothes? Especially as I invested my money and love into some of these pieces. However, if the clothes don’t work for your body type and don’t make you feel good, consider giving these away to charity or selling them. We want are wardrobe to be filled with items that work for us and make us feel good.

No.5 Organise by Colour

This is the mos transformative thing I have ever done in my wardrobe. I feel this works because if you get out a top and you need a jacket that will go with it, than easier to see and find in your wardrobe. I feel that colour is the most important principle in bringing an outfit together. Organising by colour makes it really easy to visualise outfits and push them together.

No.6 Separate your wardrobe into little wardrobes

Separate your wardrobe into little wardrobes digitally. There are lots of apps that can help with this, personally I have been using Open Wardrobe. You upload all you items in your wardrobe to the app. You can categorise your clothes in this app and put outfits together without having to ransack your wardrobe.

No.7 Make sure anything you need to use is in reach, and anything that doesn’t interest you right now is out of reach.

Maybe there’s an item that you’re not interested in right now, maybe its not reflecting the season but that season is coming soon or it doesn’t reflect the stage you are at in your life. Maybe put that item behind other clothes and make sure the clothes that you really are interested in are in reach.

No.8 Some things need hanging but they’re not part of your core wardrobe.

You may have items that need hanging but are not in your favourites space. I would recommend to buy a rail so that you can store these items properly but separately from you core wardrobe.

No.9 Keep shoes, bags and accessories separate.

Keep shoes and bags outside of your wardrobe, keep them separate to your clothes. They are a separate exercise and its much easier to look at them like this. They can end up cluttering you wardrobe, separating them keeps your wardrobe tidier.
